Poultry production in the western USA
World poultry production increases every year, mainly due to the global increase in population and the need to satisfy it with protein of animal origin. The United States is one of the countries with the highest poultry production, both broiler, turkey and eggs...

The United States is one of the biggest chicken producers’ countries in the world, with about 9 billion birds produced per year, and is also one of the main egg producers, followed only by China and the European Union, with about 110 billion eggs produced per year. Regarding the production of turkeys, it is the country with the highest production of turkeys, with some 220 million birds of this species raised throughout the year.
Production by areas in the United States
By areas within the United States, the center-west zone (mid-west), also known as the corn belt, or corn belt of the United States, where the largest cereal production in the country is accumulated, stands out for having also a high production of broiler and eggs. In this area, Missouri, Minnesota and Wisconsin are the largest broiler producers, respectively with 292, 58 and 55 million birds raised annually and, in the case of egg production, Iowa is clearly the largest producing state with 15,385 million per year, followed by Indiana, Missouri, Minnesota and Wisconsin with 10,377, 3,800, 2,500 and 2,275 million eggs produced respectively.
However, in addition to this area of the center-west, the entire eastern slope of the United States, including the coastal states, has a high production of both eggs and broiler, highlighting states such as Georgia and Alabama, with 1,300 and 1,200 million broilers raised annually, and in the case of eggs, North Carolina produces more than 4,000 million, with an also remarkable broiler production, with 960 million birds produced per year. The rest of the states in the eastern region also have high average productions, both of eggs and broiler, which, although they are lower than those of the mentioned states, their surface is smaller, but even so they have an important impact on the total poultry production of USA.
Situation in the western of United States
In the western states of the country, poultry production is much lower than in the eastern and midwestern areas described above, but it is, however, significant in the coastal states of California, Oregon, and Washington.
In this region, broiler production is concentrated mainly in the state of California, with about 17.5 million produced annually, being in the top 10 of the broilers producing states in the United States.
Regarding egg production in the western of United States, California is the largest producing state, with about 4,000 million eggs produced per year. This, in addition, makes this state one of the 10 largest egg producers in the country, with a population of about 14 million laying hens. Washington and Oregon also have remarkable egg production, with an estimated 2,000 million and 680 million annual eggs produced annually.
Finally, although turkey production is concentrated in the central and eastern regions of the United States, the West Coast has a production of about 8 million turkeys, concentrated entirely in the state of California. This production corresponds to approximately 4% of the total number of turkeys produced in the country, and California is one of the 10 largest producing states of this species within the United States.
Perspectives
Over the last decade, there has been a general increase in all poultry sectors, with growth expected for 2022 as well. The most unpredictable sector is turkey, where more factors usually influence, such as consumer preferences or tourism, although, however, a production similar to that of the last two years prior of 2022 is expected. However, a growth is expected for the broiler and egg sectors, especially in the first, with an increase of approximately between 1.5 and 2%. Egg production, on the other hand, is expected to maintain a less marked growth, but it is anticipated to reach an increase of 1%.
Conclusions
World poultry production increases every year, mainly due to the global increase in population and the need to satisfy it with protein of animal origin. The United States is one of the countries with the highest poultry production, both broiler, turkey and eggs. In the country, the midwestern and eastern states stand out, but production in the western region is very notable, mainly in the state of California, which is a producer of eggs and turkeys within the top 10 in the country, with one also remarkable broiler production. Growth prospects, both in the western region and in the rest of the country, are for growth of up to 2% in 2022, for which it will be necessary more than ever to improve production efficiency due to the volatility of prices of raw materials production.
