Renewable energy at the service of the poultry industry
Renewable energy has become a topic of great importance worldwide, due to the continuous search of friendly environmental and, at the same time, profitable solutions in the various industries.

Renewable energy is all the energy that is obtained from virtually inexhaustible natural sources (such as water, sun, wind and animal or plant biomass), either due to the immense amount of energy they contain or because they are capable of regenerating themselves by means natural.
It comes from natural resources, for this reason, it does not pollute the environment and is not depleted; because some resources like the sun are abundant or because they are resources that can be found anywhere in the world.
Renewable energy has become a topic of great importance worldwide, due to the continuous search of friendly environmental and, at the same time, profitable solutions in the various industries.
Characteristics of renewable energy
- Inexhaustible: as it comes from resources that are natural and totally renewable, the available quantity can be maintained over time.
- It does not pollute; as the definition of renewable energy indicates, it is a clean energy that does not generate waste that pollutes the environment.
- It is competitive: It is a competitive energy, since, once the initial investment has been made to function efficiently, the costs are relatively low. Furthermore, it is a type of energy that can have many and diverse applications; but most importantly, it contributes to sustainable economic development.
Renewable energy advantages in farms
- Decreases traditional energy dependency.
- It does not run out: as it comes from natural resources, it can be used as much as you like and remains renewable. For this reason, it is considered as a sustainable option for future energy use for all humanity.
- It does not emit greenhouse gases.
Types of renewable energy
-
Solar energy
Solar energy is that obtained from sunlight. This can be:
- Solar Photovoltaic: using photovoltaic panels, collects the sun’s radiation that is converted into electricity.
- Solar Thermoelectric: also known as solar thermos. In this case, solar energy is used to produce heat and with it you can heat water and cook food. The sun’s energy is concentrated through the use of mirrors or lenses.
-
Wind power
It is the energy that can be produced using the force of the wind. The wind moves the mills that are connected to electricity generators.
-
Hydroelectric power
It is the energy obtained by the power of the river currents.
-
Marine power
It is the energy carried by the ocean waves.
-
Biomass and biogas
This type of energy is obtained through the use of organic matter. It is produced by burning organic waste of animal or plant organic.
-
Geothermal energy
It is the heat generated and stored inside the Earth. It can be used to produce heat and electrical energy. It is available 24 hours a day in deposits located inside the earth’s surface, usually in volcanic areas.
Renewable energy in the poultry
In the poultry sector, some entrepreneurs have started to implement the use of photovoltaic solar energy for poultry production farms. This type of renewable energy is the most common in this sector. In addition to reducing electricity consumption, it helps to avoid fluctuations that are registered in the system; situation that in many cases causes losses in the production of birds.
Electricity is the largest operating expense for a poultry farm and the most vital. Without power to run the fans and tunnel ventilation system in the houses during hot seasons, a flock of chickens can die in seven minutes.
Another favorable point of the use of this energy is that the energy security of the process is increased, since, among other things, dependence on fossil fuels is reduced. And finally, the carbon footprint is reduced.
If you want to incorporate solar energy in your farm, you must consider some aspects for the viability of the project:
- You have to be aware of regulatory part, which will depend on each country.
- You should know the environment and weather of the place where you plan to install.
- The price of energy is of paramount importance, since the trend is to increase and it is increasingly consumed and costs more to generate it.
- The installation has to be carried out by a responsible and serious company with experience.
- Finally, you should consider project financing and return on investment.
