Poultry production in Ghana has a great value on the country’s economy, accounting for 14% of the country’s total gross domestic product. In Ghana, as in other West African countries, chicken continues to be the main source of protein preferred by consumers.

Chicken consumption in the country is around 13 kg per Capita annual (2021) and is expected to demand reach 460 million tons during this year, which implies an increase of 15% over the previous year. In terms of production, although chicken production is growing significantly in recent years, it is not sufficiently developed to supply the country’s domestic demand. Domestic production is expected to reach 60 million tons, which represents an increase of 20% over the previous year. The main countries from which Ghana exports chicken meat are the Netherlands, Poland, the United States and Belgium. To reverse this situation, the authorities in Ghana are promoting the poultry sector, modernizing it and helping to finance new poultry companies.

One of the biggest challenges for the poultry industry in Ghana is the high cost of production, especially of the raw materials to produce the feed. The price of these raw materials, especially corn, has increased by between 49 and 82% in the last two years.
