Taiwan Situation By: Sophia Hsu

Taiwan is an island. Taiwan used to be an agriculture society. However, the attack of Foot-Mouth-Disease (FMD) broke out in march 1997, the market of poultry and livestock declined 35%, the exportations to Japan and other countries were severally affected, so currently the breedings are mainly for sale within Taiwan island.
There are 55 GMP pharmaceutical factories (4 out of 55 are making vaccine) locally in Taiwan, all veterinary APIs, about 90% depends on importation, annual consumption expenses is approx. USD 700,000,00.- (including medicine, vaccine, feed additive and disinfectant etc.).
The general situation of Breeding Figures in Taiwan in Nov, 2009:
Swine: 6,800,000 heads
Poultry: 100,000,000 heads
Cattle: 160,000 heads
Goat: 480,000 heads
Prices pf raw materials in last 10 years in Taiwan
Table of price: https://www.veterinariadigital.com/wp-content/uploads/antiguas/794c040513c29b5.jpg
(According to the table of price of feed raw material in 10 years, we can see the cost of feed has been almost doubled)
Here I provide with some figures about prices and costs. Please note figures are approximate.
No of Pig heads/1999: around 6,800,000 heads, 2009 (November 30th): 6,145,950 heads
Pork market price: (2010)NT 6300~6800/100Kg
Raising cost: (2010)NT 5500~5800/100Kg
Broiler market price: 1999: NT 38Kg, (2010)NT 42~43/Kg
Raising cost: (1999) NT: 22~23/Kg,(2010) NT: 36~38/Kg
Yellow birds market price: (1999) NT: 55/Kg, (2010) NT: 65~68/Kg
Raising cost: (1999) around NT 40/Kg, (2010) NT: 56/Kg
As the above information, we can conclude that the profit to farmers has been declined dramatically because of high raising cost (feed cost) and disease break-out.
Moreover, raising type in poultry field has been changed, more than 80% of broiler market is controlled by feed millers. This has also caused sluggish consumption of nutritional / health feed additives as well.
