Egg production in Honduras managed to grow by 0.5% for the first two months of 2021.
Honduras is one of the largest egg producers in Central America. Egg production in Honduras is estimated at approximately 3.6 million eggs per day. In the past, Honduras was a major importer of eggs, but it has become an exporter. So much so that today it is one of the leading exporters of chicken eggs to the U.S. market.

According to the latest Monthly Index of Economic Activity, called IMAE, which is carried out by the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH), poultry farming grew by 0.5%, mainly due to egg production in Honduras.
The BCH report associates this 0.5% egg production increase to household demand in Honduras. In addition, according to available information, they also attribute the increase to higher demand from the food industry.
IMAE mentions that the tropical storms of November 2020 severely affected the agricultural sector in Honduras. This resulted in the loss of crops in particular. However, these tropical storms also affected farms that were starting their production process. Another sector strongly affected by the adverse weather was the fishing sector, especially shrimp and lobster.
Egg production in Honduras was promote at the beginning of this century when policies were implemented to strengthen poultry farming. Today, Honduras is a consolidated exporter of eggs to other Central American countries and some North American regions such as Iowa and Georgia.

The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed difficulties on egg production in Honduras, mainly associated with mobility restrictions implemented by the government. Despite this, the poultry sector in Honduras has managed to maintain its production and obtain positive balances so far in 2021.
