Colombian fish will have a quality and sustainability seal to strengthen international trade and increase exports.
Colombian fish will now have access to a quality and sustainability seal thanks to a new initiative of the aquaculture sector. An alliance between the Colombian Federation of Aquaculture Producers (Fedeacua) and ProColombia will make it possible to grant this seal to fish producers. The function of this distinction will be to certify production processes in the fish farming sector that meet the requirements. To qualify, producers must comply with Colombian and international regulations.
Quality and sustainability seal: What impact does it have?
This new quality and sustainability seal for the Colombian fishing sector seeks to strengthen the national and international market. With this certificate, confidence in production processes and compliance with the highest processing standards is increased. As a result, markets in Europe and North America may be interested in importing Colombian products.

In recent years, the tilapia market has gained market share among consumers in Spain, Canada, and the United States. ProColombia reports that the aquaculture and fishing sector is one of the most solid in the country. Therefore, Colombia could become one of the great pantries of fish products for the world and contribute to the food security of nations. In addition, Colombian fish would offer a wide variety of products with this quality and sustainability seal.
Livestock and fish products benefit from the seals of quality, safety, and sustainability, as they generate consumer satisfaction. They are proof that good practices have been carried out throughout the production process and that they launch a product of the highest quality on the market. On the other hand, the environmental impact nowadays is a consideration that all productions contemplate. For this reason, they establish and promote environmental sustainability and support the care of the environment.
Colombian fish has favorable figures
Trout is another Colombian fish whose production will benefit from this quality and sustainability seal. Consumers are looking for products that are good for their health and therefore choose foods with a high content of quality protein and components that are beneficial to their health. Colombian fish is one of the products that provide these benefits for human nutrition.
According to Fedeacua figures, in 2015 Colombian fish was exported for a value of US$50 million. Recently, in 2020 estimates indicate that exports of the fish sector were valued at around the US$70 million. This figure represented a 40% increase in exports in only 5 years.
This initiative adds to the good situation of the Colombian fish farming sector in the international market. According to Fedeacua’s calculations, between 2015 and 2020 the sector’s exports went from US$50 million to US$70 million, an increase of 40% in 5 years. The main destination for these exports was the United States, especially Miami. Other destinations were Peru and Ecuador in Latin America, and Spain and the United Kingdom in Europe.
