Interview of the CEO of Giordano Poultry Plast, Oscar Giordano, with Veterinaria Digital on the 60th anniversary of the Italian company.

The poultry industry is one of the livestock sectors that is constantly growing to meet the challenges of the 21st century. For this reason, Giordano Poultry Plast, an Italian company, has focused on producing innovative and sustainable solutions that respond to the needs of the poultry sector. Thanks to this continuous work, the company is currently celebrating 60 years of operation serving the livestock industry.
To understand the success and journey of this important company, we have interviewed the CEO, Oscar Giordano, about the history of the company, its importance, and prospects.

- Giordano Poultry Plast has been working for the livestock industry for 60 years. How were the first years of the company and who were the pioneers of its development?
Our company has had a continuous and positive development throughout its 60-year history. The livestock farming context more than half a century ago was certainly quite different from today’s, in terms of size, geographical location and level of technology. The business started by my family, by my father Osvaldo and his brother, then continued with my own arrival in 1995 and that of my brother Enrico five years later.
The countries where sales have been made have also gradually changed: in the beginning, the markets were national and in France. Over the years, the business has expanded to the rest of Europe and then to include the Mediterranean basin and gradually the rest of the world.
- Giordano Poultry Plast’s raw materials are related to plastic, what has changed in this product during these decades?
Plastic is a product that gives rise to many conflicting opinions. I can say without any doubt that it is not the material that is sitting on the dock. In fact, plastic is just a fantastic resource, in terms of flexibility, durability, and the possibility of combining it with so many other materials to achieve performances that were unthinkable just a few years ago, in any field of application.
Therefore, the question we must ask ourselves is not whether to replace plastic with something else, but how to use it.
This is the real problem and the challenge we must respond to now. The single use of plastic and the lack of control over its use and dispersal in the environment is the real urgency of today, which can no longer be postponed.

- What are the main characteristics and values of the company that have remained in force over the years?

The entire development of the company has always been based on certain fixed points, which have not changed much over all these years.
Two guidelines: research and innovation, to which the concept of environmental sustainability has been added in recent years.
In fact, our company has constantly updated itself concerning the design of new products, to optimize zootechnical production, through the conception of new devices for breeding and transporting both animals and food products, such as eggs and slaughtered products.
Another major focus is on environmental sustainability. So much so that we have decided to draw up a detailed sustainability balance, to demonstrate, numbers in hand, how the company deals with the input and consumption of natural resources.

- What has been the driving force behind the company’s growth during these 60 years?

The answer to this question I think could be the relentless pursuit to stay relevant, as I said, in the search for innovative solutions and the commitment to the market and the world around us.

- Giordano Poultry Plast is present in a lot of countries, which countries currently have the strongest participation?

Our products are intended for the poultry sector, which is the largest in the world in the livestock sector. Giordano Poultry Plast has the ambition to be a leader in many areas of this market, for the transport of animals (drawers and cages) and the handling of eggs for consumption and hatching, through the Egg Cargo System (ECG) line. Our commercial activity is therefore concentrated where this market develops. In recent years, the center of this market has gradually shifted towards areas where it has found the greatest growth, particularly in the Asian continent.
We therefore followed this trend, progressively increasing our commercial presence, while always continuing to protect historical areas, such as Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas.

- Which countries does GPP expect to become a destination for its high-quality products?

In line with the trend just described, we are organizing ourselves to further increase our participation in the Asian market of poultry equipment, with a particular eye on realities such as China, India, Vietnam, the Philippines.

- GPP currently has a line of products designed for poultry and swine farming. Are there any plans to manufacture products for other animal production industries?

As our name says, the company was born within the poultry sector, which has remained the fulcrum of our business. However, and, for the development of vaccination devices marketed through the Valery Technologies brand, we have developed professional devices for all species of zootechnical interest, such as pigs, but also including cattle, sheep, and rabbits.
For the veterinary sector, our approach can be summarized in two words: customization of existing devices and the ability to develop new ones, based on the needs of the applicant. This approach has found a positive response from many interlocutors of the first magnitude in the veterinary pharmaceutical production sector.

- The animal production industry is a protagonist in the world economy. What projection does GPP have for this sector in the future?

Precisely from the awareness of the so key role of animal husbandry and the recognition received by the sector for our products, we intend to continue and take on an increasingly evident role within the sector, thanks to the correspondence of our offer to the growing expectations of the market. The animal production sector is called to the most important of challenges: demonstrate that it can also be sustainable for the future of the planet, thanks to the reduction of the environmental impact of its most advanced solutions in terms of design and materials.

- GPP has made notable efforts for environmental sustainability in its products and services. What are the company’s greatest achievements in environmental matters?

In developing our environmental sustainability balance, we were able to demonstrate that our business is fully sustainable from an environmental point of view. There are also some choices that we have consciously decided to make, such as the own production of the electricity needed by our main production plant, the one located in Italy in Caraglio.
Our power plant, which makes the production site self-sufficient, is powered exclusively by non-fossil fuels.
Another significant contributor to reducing our environmental impact.

- GPP’s products are designed for animal welfare and productivity improvement. How has GPP become a leader in animal welfare implementation?

When we talk about animal welfare, we must constantly remember that this is improved if we constantly keep an eye on the objective of considering the approach holistically.
Here then we are the ones who in many cases suggest how the equipment could evolve from a technical point of view to reduce stress and increase animal welfare, and then suggest how the related rules and laws could be updated.
In this process, GPP is constantly and structurally connected with prestigious universities and researchers, not only Italian, who provide the necessary technical support for design and construction choices.

- What are the main challenges nowadays in the animal industry?

The productions of the global food industry are becoming cheaper every day from the point of view of the unit cost of production, but at the same time increasingly impacting from an environmental point of view. The challenge of the third millennium is represented by the need for the entire system represented by animal production and the industries that supply from genetics to pharmaceuticals, from equipment to animal feed, to be able to find the balance that allows growth to continue by stopping the pressure on the exhaustion of resources.
The challenge is huge, but I believe that the market will have to find this balance if it is to continue to exist and provide food for humans.

- How do you think your products are helpful for pig and poultry production?

In the logic I have just described, I believe that the GPP offer can represent a conscious choice in the direction of sustainability of the entire livestock system. A possible way to continue in prudence without destroying the world that hosts us and that allows us to see a future to our presence on earth.

- What are the main objectives for GPP in the near future?
-
GPP intends to constantly expand its commercial offer while maintaining firm commitments in terms of innovation, research, and sustainability.
It is an essential and, I would say, epochal challenge, which sees us all committed to designing a probable future for us as men and co-inhabitants, with all animal species, of this planet.
We have the ambition to be considered pioneers in the way we imagined our future could be.
