Biovet S.A., 35 years of history: the previous years
The first issue of this series addresses some of the main events that led to the creation of Biovet

Biovet S.A. was founded in Tarragona at a time when poultry was a very important economic factor in the region
The constitution of Biovet was gestating the years prior to its foundation with various actions: studies and collaborations related to diagnosis; and the application of zootechnical programs and research of the main causes of productivity losses.
In 1984, a group of veterinarians and chemists with extensive experience in clinical practice and in the manufacture of additives and premixes for animal nutrition decided to found the company.
Most of the founders were trained in Córdoba, in a university focused on clinical research and where the work of the professors Castejón, Sánchez-Franco and Jordano stood out.
The University of Córdoba welcomed the founders of Biovet S.A. where they took their veterinary studies and had the teaching of recognized professors in the sector such as:
- Rafael Castejón, a first-class zootechnician and a precursor of research and veterinary chemistry. He made numerous innovations in bacteriosis and virosis and contributed to the manufacture of serums and vaccines throughout his career.
- Ãngel Sánchez Franco, who stood out for the development and the registering of several vaccine patents that stood out in the field of veterinary pathology.
- Diego Jordano, Professor of Botanical Biology and Applied Zoology. He was a scientist who conducted numerous investigations on the behavior of cellular organelles.
The three professors were a source of inspiration for Biovet’s first steps on research and product development.
The founders actively collaborated with academies, universities and participated in several conferences
The founding partner, Dr. Jaime Borrell, actively collaborated with several veterinary institutions giving lectures related to the advances of his research.
In 1979, he gave a lecture entitled ‘Mycosis and Mycotoxicosis in Veterinary Medicine’ at the Spanish Academy of Veterinary Sciences, which presented the etiological classification of mycosis by anatomical areas for the very first time.
In 1983,  Dr. Borrell participated in the 21st Scientific Symposium held by the Spanish section of the World’s Poultry Science Association, where held a session on ‘Respiratory processes in broilers and femoral injuries’. These studies addressed the use of bone marrow’s microbiological issolation as an instrument to prevent respiratory and septicemic diseases in birds.
In the same year, training and dissemination sessions were held at the Official School of Veterinarians of Tarragona, where topics such as sources of raw materials for animal feed, impact of new formulation trends in the manufacture of feed and new regulations on animal feed were discussed.
Dr. Borrell also gave the conference ‘Ochratoxin A: injuries’ at the University of Barcelona in 1984 and, in the same year, he became part of the Reading Committee of the journal Archivos de Zootecnia at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Córdoba.
Clinic, analysis and diagnosis, key points in the foundation of the company
These facts, added to the formation in veterinary sciences of the founders, were the first steps to establish the foundations and create Biovet S.A., a company focused on the research and the manufacture of additives for animal nutrition.
The zootechnical programs and productive parameter controls were the basis to develop the products
During the initial years, the company founders focused on developing zootechnical programs and making clinical field visits in order to detect the most frequent pathologies on farms. Fruit of the first steps, new zootechnical programs for broilers, layers, breeding sows, piglets and calves were developed. Once the diagnosis was made, research focused on the formulation of products that would begin to be commercialized a few years later.
