Animal feed registration was the main topic of the 5th session of the XXXI International Symposium Biovet 2018, which took place in Tarragona from May 26th to 29th, 2018. During this session, held on May 29th, the introduction of the most common worldwide diseases in swine was made, as well as the main poultry diseases in India. The symposium gathered producers and distributors of poultry and swine sectors from all over the world and showed the novelties of the main research lines, based on in vivo and in vitro studies, of the manufacturer company of additives of natural origin, Biovet.

The 5th session, moderated by Dr. Eduard Torres, began with a presentation given by PhD. Roberto S. Minetti, of the National Service of Health and Agri-Food Quality of Argentina (SENASA, as its initials in Spanish), entitled: "Animal feed registration in Argentina. Feedlatina. Functional Food". He explained the 2 existing ways of product registration in Argentina: "verifying it in the place of production or without verifying it in the place of production".

According to Minetti, "the registration of products in each Latin America country, chooses the way to register. For example, Chile and Brazil examine at the place of production (via inspection, that is, the company informs, then it is verified in situ, and it is necessary to inspect permanently the manufacture of the finished product (Good Manufacturing Practices, BPM, for its initials in Spanish) and then you can start selling, since we give credit to the sworn statement of the company)". On the other side, in Argentina and Uruguay, "they do it without examining at the place of production, that is, the company sends a report, which must be approved and a certificate issued (BPM). At this time, it can be processed and sold, since we give credit to the dossier, although routine visits are conducted.

BRIEF HISTORY OF FEEDLATINA
The dissertation of the representative of SENASA (Argentina) continued with an explanation of Feedlatina, specifically the project that was carried out between 2014 and 2018 with the aim of: "contributing to regulatory harmonization, the safety of animal feed and regional integration, as well as providing public-private cooperation strategies based on the recommendations of the competent international organizations, for the public and private agents involved".

Feedlatina is made up for 5-member countries and 10 participating countries and is formed by a mixed technical Committee: official members of the different countries and members representing the industry. "Currently, funds are being negotiated with the IDB to continue for 2 more years," he said. Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Argentina and Uruguay were the venues of the meetings, held during the project.

FUNCTIONAL FOOD
Minetti also emphasized the importance of functional food for humans, which he described as "food or dietary component able to provide a health benefit (physical or mental) or prevent the incidence of any pathology in the host, beyond of the contributions made to basic nutrition and added:" in developed countries 100% of functional food 60 to 70% are probiotics, i.e. live microorganisms that, administered in adequate doses, provide a health benefit of the consumer beyond basic nutrition".

Finally concluded: "the development of probiotic food is in continuous expansion, driven by the growing interest of consumers. It is important to highlight that in the scientific field there are concepts to be defined and technological resources to be developed, to support this expansion. And he asseverated: "we are entering a new era where health claims must be confirmed not only for the origin, but for the origin in the food by in vivo trials."

LEGISLATIVE DEVELOPMENTS IN THE EU
For its part, the head of the Food Section of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fish and Food of the Generalist de Catalunya, Belen Folgers, highlighted in his speech the "Legislative developments in animal nutrition in the European Union" In this regard, said: "The ban on the use of Antibiotics as Growth Promoters (AGPs) is in force in the European Union (EU) from January 1, 2016. Currently the alternatives are: probiotics, organic acids and extracts of plants". Therefore, there are new regulations in process on veterinary drugs and medicated feed.

PIGS´ AND BIRDS´ PATHOLOGIES
The 6th and final session of the XXXI International Symposium Biovet 2018, moderated by PhD. Eduard Torres, was also held on May 29th. The session began with a presentation by PhD. Julia Pié, responsible for the technical team of Biovet S.A. "Top 12 global swine pathologies". Then, "The main pathologies in poultry farming in India" were the protagonists, in a dissertation given by Maria Soriano, of Biovet technical team.

Finally, the Content Responsible of www.veterinariadigital.com, Marta Dompablo, presented this digital publication, specialized in veterinary medicine and focused on research in animal production. Then, as the final culmination of the XXXI International Biovet Symposium was the Biovet 2018 Awards ceremony.
