AMVEC Congress 2023 concluded successfully and consolidated itself as a robust platform for the Mexican pork sector. Over three days, the event brought together professionals from the swine industry and facilitated a cutting-edge scientific program with acknowledged national and international speakers, face-to-face interactions, networking, and a lively commercial area.
Over 1500 visitors from 10 countries, representing 4 continents, travelled to Mexico between 1-4 August 2023 to participate the AMVEC Congress 2023 at the Expo Mundo Imperial Acapulco, Guerrero. The first-class convention centre with 68,000 m2 of construction ensured the success of the event which was ideal for holding different speeches simultaneously and organising exhibition spaces.
Veterinaria Digital, as one of the official media partners, participated at the Congress with a booth and presented the services of the portal and its initiatives related to animal production.
At the Congress opening three exceptional figures of the Mexican swine industry was acknowledged for their lifelong committed work in the field of education, production, and the overall support of the sector. Dr Joaquín Becerril Ángeles, the 15th president of AMVEC between 2001 and 2003 and to whom the LV AMVEC Congress was dedicated, received a special recognition. The two Golden Boars were awarded to Dr. Alejandro Vargas Sánchez and Dr. Martha Alicia Acosta Padilla, founder of Martha Acosta Foundation, a non-profit organization which provides support to the veterinary education sector, with a focus on pig farming.
In his opening speech, the president of AMVEC, MVZ José Antonio Padilla Pérez, emphasized that the state of Guerrero, the Congress’ location, ranks second nationally in pork consumption after Yucatan; they consume over 800,000 heads. Pork production has been one of the fastest-growing meat sectors in Mexico over the last five years as it has increased by an average of 3,4% year over year. Last year livestock farming generated almost 8 billion tonnes of meat, where pork had the second largest production volume after beef, with more than 1,7 billion tonnes produced throughout the year.
With a focus on the latest scientific and technical advances, AMVEC’s Congress program was a major highlight at the event. With over 60 high-level speakers and more than 11 sessions spread over four days, attendees had a unique opportunity to gain insights into the best practices from leading swine experts on a wide range of topics, such as group gestation, precision feeding or controlling swine influenza, securing antimicrobial reduction, improving gut health, sustainable solutions for animal production, and many more.
At the end of the Congress, members of AMVEC elected their new vice president who will occupy this post for two years. At the official meeting MVZ Rolanado Beltrán Figueroa received the most votes.
The Mexican pork market has a strong potential for further expansion, and AMVEC is a driving force in this process. This year’s Congress served as the primary platform for investors and interested parties to meet local producers and international stakeholders of the sector and to create future collaborations.
