Lesions caused by C. perfringens in proventriculus

In the transit area between the proventriculus and the gizzard, there are anaerobic conditions where Clostridium perfringens can multiplicate. In this location, C. perfringens causes ulceration and thickening of the wall of the proventriculus. To confirm the disease, the mucosa of the small intestine should be checked, where it is common to observe focal lesions that correspond to areas of necrosis with loss of villi, and sometimes haemorrhagic content.
