Prof. Guillermo Suárez Fernández was born in Sena de Luna (León) on January 27, 1929. Prof. Suárez Fernández obtained a PhD in Veterinary Medicine, and a degree in Biological Sciences and Pharmacy.

His academic career began as Professor of Microbiology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zaragoza in 1971, and later at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Barcelona in 1974, where he was Dean between 1974 and 1977. In 1977, he assumed the Chair of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Madrid, an institution where he was also Dean between 1980 and 1994. In addition, in 1986, he assumed the Chair of Animal Pathology at the same faculty.

In 1993, he became a full member of the Royal Academy of Veterinary Sciences with his speech “Animal Retroviruses and Public Health” and later in the National Academy of Medicine of Spain. He received recognition in Belgium and the United States.

His scientific work includes 310 experimental publications, most of them in high-impact international journals, principal investigator in sixteen research projects, and advisor in five projects of the Interministerial Commission of Science and Technology (CICYT).

Prof. Guillermo Suárez Fernández collaborated with Dr. Jaime Borrell and Dr. M. Àngels Calvo in the organization of several courses on Food Mycology at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Barcelona, ​​was part of the Court of Dr. Borrell’s Doctoral Thesis at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zaragoza and attended Dr. Borrell’s inaugural speech at the Royal Academy of Veterinary Sciences and several of his conferences while his health allowed it.
