At Veterinaria Digital we regret to report the death of Professor Dr Ubaldo Barria Gómez.
Born on December 22, 1947, in Panama City, Panama; Dr Ubaldo grew up in a family very involved with Panamanian politics and culture, formed by Ubaldo Barria Montero and Heliodora Gómez de Barria.
He graduated in 1969 from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Federal University Santa María, Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil.
Once he returned to Panama, he carried out his professional work between 1969 and 1970, as director of the Veterinary School and, in 1972, he began his work at the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) until 2009, as Head of Registries and Accreditation.
During these years he stood out for his organizational capacity and his interest in creating the legal system that would facilitate trade and the installation of industries in his country.
In this period, three activities of great importance stand out:
- In 1994, it developed the legislation on accreditation and registration of veterinary products.
- In 1997, he organized the joint Veterinary Committee meeting between Panama and the United States for the declaration of Panama as a country free of avian velogenic virus from Newcastle Disease.
- In 2002, he participated in the establishment of maximum limits for residues of Additives, contaminants, pesticide residues and veterinary drugs in foods of the “FAO Codex Alimentarias”.
Once his collaboration with MIDA ended, Ubaldo Barria returned in 2010 to the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, as a professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
In 2016 he participated in the book “History of Veterinary Medicine in the Isthmus of Panama”.
Professor Dr Ubaldo Barria remained at the Faculty until 2020.
We can also highlight that throughout his professional life he worked as a bovine clinical veterinarian and livestock technical advisor.
Finally, we will mention that, during his working career, he stood out for being an honest person who with his example fought to avoid irregularities in the institutions in which he worked. In addition, on a personal and professional level, Dr Ubaldo Barria demonstrated a high sense of friendship, which earned him the admiration of many people.
