Enzyme deficiency and EN in broiler

Enzyme deficiency leads to an excess of undigested substrate in the intestine of the birds. This substrate can be used by bacteria, which multiply causing different types of enteritis. In this image, subtilisin deficiency led to an excess of protein in the intestine, which was used by Clostridium perfringens to proliferate excessively and cause an outbreak of necrotic enteritis.
