Editorial 6: Academies of Veterinary Sciences
The word “academy” originally meant a group of teachers or a school where a subject was taught. Later on, universities were called academies, gathering all the faculties or most of them.
Nowadays, the word “Academy” is used to designate scientific, literary or artistic societies which main goal is enhancing a new science or art. There are academies of public foundation and private foundation both individual and collective.
In some countries, the membership of an Academy is involved to an elitism environment. However, some people think that Academies are formed by innovators (those professionals or artists that contributes with some significant advance to the science) so the Academy would be integrated by creative and nonconformist people.
If we carry out a survey among the population who are surrounded by, we will find another characteristic of the Academies, especially about the Academies of Veterinary Sciences as they are anonymous for us.
Thus, we can see that Academies have 2 characteristics: they are scientific societies composed by professionals between elitists and innovators and anonymous for most population.
For this reason we propose that the Academies of Veterinary Sciences assume the role of spreading as is the function that Veterinary Sciences has in modern societies so we offer our blog to all those academies which want to divulgate their activities.
From Veterinaria Digital we also propose that Academies of Veterinary Sciences go ahead by promoting innovative projects aimed to improve the human nutrition and the preservation of animal species (both domestic and wild ones) as these species, in some way, suppose a reservation of biodiversity and sources of food, in the future for the human specie.
From Veterinaria Digital we propose that Academies of Veterinary Sciences have public and constant presence, to clarify and correct that information which manipulates news related to human and animal health, production and animal welfare. They should also demand to public stratums, their function of scientific assessors so that the executive and legislative class can act according to current veterinary knowledges, by avoiding interventions based on partisan interests.
Finally, from Veterinaria Digital we propose that Academies of Veterinary Sciences act with universal criteria.
