Editorial 44: status of the situation of poultry farming for meat in Europe.
The situation of poultry farming for meat in Europe is worrying if is taken into account the overall situation. Thus, the costs of production and distribution in Europe are, respectively, 48% and 31% higher than in South America and in the world ranking of the top 20 food plants for poultry, European companies take places 8, 17 º, 19 º and 20 º.
Finally note that the European plants produce only 17.19% of the total feed among the top 100 companies worldwide.
Although forecasts on meat consumption indicates that there will be increased, especially in poultry meat, from 3.6 kg per person per year in developing countries and 3.2 kg per person per year globally, until 2020 , this increase is not equally affect all the continents, as economic and legislative factors have a different impact in each geographic area.
For this reason Europe must make a major effort in poultry genetics research in the development of cereal agriculture linked to poultry production and access to the commercialization of products by producer groups. All this must go through a legislative reform necessary to improve the competitiveness of an industry that has always evolved as a private company, without massive subsidies and other sectors and is currently highly intervened.
