Femoral head decapsulation in poultry is a secondary process to primary nutritional deficiencies – nutrient absence or underdosing -, or secondary nutrient deficiencies – nutrient malabsorption. In the case shown, femoral decapsulation is caused by an intestinal process of malabsorption due to the presence of trichothecenes in the feed.
