The blackhead or tiflohepatitis is a protozoan disease caused by Histomona meleagridis. It affects the family of being more sensitive gallinaceous turkeys, partridge’s quails. The chickens can be healthy carriers of the disease. Insects and nematodes, especially Heterakis gallinarum, are their vectors.
Presents with diarrhea, cecal lesions, ulcerations liver and hepatomegaly that ultimately affects blood circulation, caused cyanosis, which is why the disease also known as Black Head.
