Avian necrotic enteritis
The anomalous litter intake (pica) can lead to – apart from infestations caused by the intake of Alphitobius larvae – infections caused by Clostridium perfringens. This microorganism can also proliferate in the gut when there is presence of undigested protein because of an excess or the low quality of this compound in the feed. It causes lesions in the exterior and interior of the gut, as observed in the pictures. In addition, C. perfringens produces toxins with a systemic effect.
