USe of nutritional supplement in layers calcium and phosphorus absorption improvement

Introduction

A deficiency of either calcium or phosphorus in the diet of laying hens results in abnormal bones calcification and reduced shell quality. When calcium is mobilized from the bones to overcome a dietary deficiency, the cortical bone erodes and is unable to support the weight of the hen. For this reason, when having diets poor in calcium and phosphorus contents it is important to be able to improve the absorption of the minerals present in the diet.

A study was conducted in India in 2004 to test the efficiency in calcium and phosphorus absorption improvement in layers of a daily nutritional supplement with 96 µg allicin and 16 mg isoflavones.

Methodology

The animals tested were layers at 72 weeks of life, fed with a diet poor in calcium and phosphorus.

Batch A: diet with 20% of calcium and phosphorus

Batch B: diet with 20% of calcium and phosphorus + allicin + isoflavones

Batch C: diet with 20% of calcium and phosphorus + phytase

The figures in brackets show the existing differences with the batch control.

Conclusions

-          There are significant differences in the increase of calcium content analysed in the tibia of animals supplemented with allicin and isoflavones compared to the calcium content in animals from the batch control.

-          There are also significant differences in the decrease of total ashes in the batch with phytase.

-          The use of phytase in layers has the following limitations: formation of insoluble complexes in intestine, inactivation at high temperatures and potentially allergen in human beings. All these can be avoided by using this nutritional supplement with allicin and isoflavones.

Allicin and isoflavones are available under the commercial name of Alquernat Magacal.
