The AGPs were presented in the 50s as additives in the diet of animals for the production of meat, eggs and milk. The results of their application cannot be a subject of argue, however from very beginning of their use started a debate on possible negative effects in relation to food security; and impact on animal welfare and consumer health.
As we know, European legislation through regulation (EC 1831/2003) banned AGPs in Europe from 2006. Until now has begun a process of research and development of new products called alternative with a purpose of preventing and control negative causes that produce enteric problems related to certain microbial populations and always under the prism of no impact on microbial resistance.
Thus, the producers of additives in Europe has been researching intensively to test the effectiveness of new products considered as natural growth promoters , among which are organic acids, enzymes, probiotics, prebiotics, minerals, plant extracts or essential oils.
We also should be interested how the situation outside Europe is. Analyzing global legislation regarding the AGPs we can conclude that it is widely diverse and that each country accepts or prohibits the use of AGPs in particular. On the other hand, if we are able to detect a clear trend, even if it is difficult, we can move forward and rely on natural products that provide the guarantees to keep the production level achieved.
In this regard, I would like to share with you three articles that refer to the increase the awareness by governments and companies outside the Europe for the need to move towards the animal nutrition free of AGPs:
